"Please God give me a sign!”
Oh, c'mon. you have said it. I don’t care how rationale, skeptical, or “devout” an Atheist you are. When your back was against the wall, when someone you loved was hanging on for dear life, when your ass was in one of those foxholes (where do you actually find one of those things anyways?), you were bargaining with God, cutting backroom deals with the Divine, or just outright calling in favors and asking for signs.
“Please God help me out of this jam. Are you listening? Give me some direction. Give me a sign!”
And then no sign. And therefore no God. And thus no deal.
But is that true?
Often when we ask for a sign what we mean is - give me a sea splitting, sky opening, ‘oh wow’ kind of sign.
However, those aren’t miracles. Rather those are magic tricks. The Divine is not a Vegas lounge act. Ya, ya the sea split for the ancient Israelites, I get it. But maybe seas splitting and snakes talking are metaphors and myths? Cause if you see them they make this miraculous thing called anti-psychotic medication. Just saying.
Regardless, here in our reality, at least when the meds are working, snakes don’t talk and seas don’t split.
Perhaps the Source of Life, Eternity, Infinite Intelligence communicates in a bit more sophisticated manner. What do you think?
Instead of Hollywood blockbuster caliber action scenes, maybe the Divine speaks to us quietly?
Maybe it’s the flash of insight we have while sitting quietly sipping our tea? Perhaps it’s a moment of inspiration we receive while writing in our journal? Possibly it’s a gentle feeling of certainty we have about what we need to do with our life that comes upon us while walking through the woods?
Or maybe it’s the walk through the woods itself?
In the words of the Jewish mystic, the Baal Shem Tov:
“If we were to walk in the woods and a spring appeared just when we became thirsty, we would call it a miracle. And if on a second walk, if we became thirsty at just that point again, and again the spring appeared, we would remark on the coincidence. But if that spring were there always, we would take it for granted and cease to notice it. Yet is that not more miraculous still?”
Maybe the miracles, the signs and the confirmation of God’s presence within our life, aren’t super-natural or extra-ordinary at all? Maybe they are bound up within nature. Perhaps they are all around us, constantly and continuously calling out to us in a myriad of ways.
That person who comes upon your path just when you needed him most. That opportunity that presents itself to you, just as you were about to give up. That “drink of water” which shows up in your life when we feel you can no longer handle “the thirst.”
Insights, inspiration, intuition and the like, just because they are ordinary does not mean they are not extra-ordinary. And chance encounters, coincidences and synchronicities, just because they are natural does not mean they are not supernatural.
In the words of the Dalai Lama, “I am open to the guidance of synchronicity, and do not let expectations hinder my path.”
Open yourself to the guidance that is within you and all around you. Perhaps it is The Source calling out to your soul. Do not let your pre-conceptions, certainties and judgments make you miss out on all of those signs along your path.
You are not alone. You are not without guidance. You have connections and direction all around you, pointing you forward within your life. All you have to do is get quiet and listen. All you have to do is open your eyes and pay attention. All you have to do is put to rest your expectations of Supernal Magicians and Seas Splitting and Snakes Talking. Or at the very least, take your miraculous meds and let the Divine do the rest.
